The NHS Leadership Academy has designed a range of professional leadership programmes to provide targeted development for people from all backgrounds and levels of experience. The Aspiring Chief Executive programme is a bespoke programme developed for existing executive directors or equivalents who aspire to become a chief executive in a provider organisation within the next 12-24 months and who will demonstrate their readiness to be a chief executive by the end of the programme.

The aim of the suite of Academy’s national leadership development programmes is to professionalise leadership across healthcare: to recognise the importance of leadership to patients, service users, carers and staff; to set and support some common standards of leadership practice and provide a consistent approach to leadership and development for leaders as they progress in their careers.  All of the Academy national programmes are guided by the principles and values of the NHS Constitution.

The Aspiring Chief Executive programme is a collaboration between the NHS Leadership Academy, NHS Improvement and NHS Providers. It forms part of a fully resourced, strategic response to the challenge of how we identify, develop and deploy our most senior leaders. Together, these four organisations will design and deliver a programme to prepare those with the potential to become chief executives in the next 12-24 months. As well as providing exceptional development, the programme will also assess your readiness to take up these demanding roles. Successful completion will lead to an NHS Leadership Academy Award.
